Milma‘s Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (ERCMPU) will provide silage feed at subsidized rates to dairy farmers affiliated with milk cooperative societies in Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki districts. Each 50-kg packet of silage will contain finely-cut, high-quality maize without preservatives or chemicals, according to the union authorities.
Milk societies that supply more than 40% of the milk procured from farmers to the regional union will be eligible for a subsidy of ₹2 per kg. The moist, rich silage fodder will be distributed to the cooperatives according to their needs, ERCMPU chairman M.T. Jayan stated. After the subsidy, the price per kilogram of silage is ₹6.82 in Ernakulam, ₹6.72 in Thrissur, ₹6.92 in Kottayam, and ₹7.07 in Idukki. Additional silage requirements will be available without subsidy.
To further support farmers, ERCMPU will provide an extra 50 paisa per liter to farmers who supply 40 liters or more of milk daily to the cooperatives, Jayan added. ERCMPU also distributed dividends of 3% of the share value for 2022-23. This amount was disbursed along with payments for milk sold during the June 11-20 period.
